Beaches near Padstow.

Padstow itself has no beach — it's a harbour town — but the estuary it guards opens out onto some of the finest sandy coastline in Cornwall, all reachable within twenty minutes.

Padstow · North Coast

The paradox of Padstow is that despite being Cornwall's most famous coastal town, you have to leave it to reach the sea. Cross the Camel Estuary on the foot ferry to Rock and you're a short walk from the dunes of Daymer Bay; head further north to Polzeath and the Atlantic surf opens up fully. Alternatively, drive a few miles west around the headland to Harlyn Bay or the coves of Trevone and Mother Ivey's Bay — both quieter, both genuinely beautiful, and neither on most visitors' maps.

The beaches around Padstow benefit from being slightly less accessible than Newquay's, which keeps them saner in peak season. The estuary crossing also adds a pleasing deliberateness to the journey — you plan ahead, you take the ferry, you arrive feeling like you've earned it. Harlyn in particular rewards this approach: a sheltered south-facing bay that catches the afternoon sun when the north-westerly is raking everything else, making it the local's choice when the wind comes in.

Daymer Bay

Take the Black Tor Ferry from Padstow to Rock, then walk ten minutes through the dunes: Daymer Bay is a broad, sheltered estuary beach where the Camel meets the sea. The water is calm by north Cornwall standards — no Atlantic swell — and the sand is fine and warm, backed by marram grass and the dunes of St Enodoc. Parking in Rock village (busy in summer). The café in the car park is seasonal. Lifeguards in summer. Dogs on leads near the dunes, welcome elsewhere year-round.

Best for

Families with toddlers and anyone who prefers calm water

Polzeath Beach

A mile north of Daymer, Polzeath is where the estuary shelter falls away and the Atlantic arrives properly. It's a wide, sandy beach with reliable left-hand breaks that have made it a surf school staple for decades. The village above has a consistent cluster of cafés (Surfside is the go-to) and a large pay-and-display car park. Lifeguarded throughout summer. Dogs restricted May–September between the flags; welcome on the northern headland year-round. Gets genuinely busy in July and August.

Best for

Surfers of all levels and surf school groups

Harlyn Bay

The locals' answer to Polzeath, four miles west of Padstow off the B3276. Harlyn faces south and curves around a rocky headland, which means it's sheltered from north-westerly winds and catches afternoon sun when everywhere else is being battered. The sand is golden and the beach is wide at low tide. Small car park above the beach; Harlyn Inn is a five-minute walk for food. Lifeguards in summer. Dogs welcome outside peak-season restrictions. Brilliant for body-boarding.

Best for

Body-boarders, families on windy days, and afternoon sun-seekers

Trevone Bay

A small, sheltered bay a mile north of Harlyn with a car park right above the sand. The beach is compact — crowded on August bank holidays, perfect in June — and features a natural rock pool on the northern side that's one of the best natural swimming spots in north Cornwall. No lifeguards; no café on the beach itself (the village shop is a minute's walk). Dogs welcome year-round. The round hole blowhole on the cliff to the north is worth the detour.

Best for

Rock poolers, wild swimmers, and those seeking smaller crowds

Mother Ivey's Bay

The least-visited beach in this group, tucked around Trevose Head between Trevone and Booby's Bay. Access is via a farm track (Trevean Cottage) with very limited roadside parking — which keeps it quiet. The beach is a short sandy cove flanked by dramatic rock formations; at low tide it connects to Constantine Bay to the south. No facilities whatsoever. Swim with caution — no lifeguards and a rocky floor in places. Spectacular at sunset.

Best for

Solitude-seekers and coastal photographers
