Porthcurno Beach — turquoise water and white sand framed by granite cliffs.

Beaches near St Agnes.

The beaches around St Agnes are framed by the ruins of the tin mining industry — engine houses perched on cliff edges, spoil heaps reclaimed by heather — which gives this stretch of coast a particular emotional weight that the more manicured resorts entirely lack.

St Agnes · North Coast

St Agnes is not trying to be charming in the way that Padstow or St Ives is. The village is authentic in the sense that it has butchers, hardware shops, and pubs that open on a Tuesday lunchtime because locals actually use them. And the coast it sits on is genuinely wild — the headland at St Agnes Beacon rises 190 metres above sea level and the view from it on a clear day is one of the best in Cornwall, stretching from Trevose Head in the north to the Lizard in the south.

Trevaunance Cove is the main beach, a shingle-and-sand affair in a narrow valley that historically served as the town's harbour — you can still see the fragments of the old pier. It catches surf on a good day and is lifeguarded in summer. But the real draw for those who know the area is Chapel Porth, two miles south: a National Trust cove of exceptional drama that changes character completely with the tide. Come at low water, buy the hedgehog ice cream, and stay for the cliff walk back to St Agnes along the SWCP.

Trevaunance Cove

St Agnes's main beach — a compact cove of mixed sand and shingle in a steep-sided valley, with the remains of the old harbour pier visible at low tide. The beach catches decent surf when the swell is running. The Driftwood Spars pub is a 200-metre walk up the valley and is one of the better pub-restaurants on this stretch of coast, with a microbrewery on site. RNLI lifeguards in season. Dogs restricted May–September on the main beach. The valley walk down from the village is pleasant but steep; return via the cliff path for better views.

Best for

Surfers, pub-lunch visitors, and those who appreciate a beach with history

Chapel Porth Beach

Two miles south of St Agnes, Chapel Porth is a National Trust cove at the foot of a mining valley. The drama here is tidal: at low water the beach extends into a spectacular wide bay flanked by engine-house ruins on the cliffs; at high tide it vanishes entirely. The NT kiosk serves the famous hedgehog ice cream. No lifeguards — the tidal change is fast and dramatic. Dogs welcome year-round. Come at low tide, stay for the cliff walk along the SWCP to St Agnes Head (40 minutes). One of Cornwall's truly essential coastal experiences.

Best for

Photographers, adventurous families, and cliff walkers

Porthtowan Beach

Four miles north of St Agnes (or a 90-minute walk on the SWCP), Porthtowan is a solid mid-sized surf beach with the Blue Bar above it — one of the best beach bars on the entire north coast. The beach faces north-west and catches swell across a good range of tide states. Surfboard hire available. RNLI lifeguards in summer. Dogs restricted May–September. Car park fills fast in August — arrive before 10am or walk from St Agnes for the full coastal experience.

Best for

Surfers and those wanting a beach with strong café culture

Newdowns Head & Polly Joke

Officially Porth Joke, and known locally as Polly Joke — a National Trust cove four miles south of St Agnes, near Cubert. No car access to the beach itself; park at Cubert Common and walk 20 minutes through the fields. The reward is one of Cornwall's prettiest small beaches: a sandy cove backed by wildflower meadows, with good surf on the right swell and very few people even in summer. No facilities at all. Dogs welcome year-round. The wildflowers in the clifftop meadows are exceptional in May and June.

Best for

Walkers, wildflower enthusiasts, and those who want a genuinely uncrowded beach
