Beaches near St Ives.

St Ives is probably the only town in England with four separately named beaches within walking distance of its centre, each facing a different direction and drawing a different crowd.

St Ives · West Cornwall

The geography of St Ives is genuinely unusual: a peninsula with the town on its neck, the old harbour to the south-east, and beaches facing north, south, and east — all within ten minutes' walk of the church. Porthmeor faces the Atlantic and gets the surf; Porthminster faces Carbis Bay and is almost always sheltered; Porthgwidden sits between the headland and the town and is tiny but perfect. This variety means you can follow the sun and the wind around the peninsula depending on conditions, which is exactly what the locals do.

The light in St Ives is not imaginary. The combination of facing water on three sides, the pale Porthia sand, and the white-rendered harbour buildings produces something genuinely different to anywhere else in Cornwall — which is why artists have been coming here since the 1880s and why the Tate St Ives sits above Porthmeor rather than in any of Cornwall's larger towns. The beaches themselves are not Cornwall's most dramatic, but they are among its most beautiful, and the density of good food and galleries within a ten-minute walk of all of them puts St Ives in a category of its own.

Porthmeor Beach

The surf beach — north-facing, Atlantic-exposed, and wide enough to absorb a crowd. The Tate St Ives sits above the eastern end, which is either the world's best-positioned gallery or a strange priority depending on your sympathies. The Porthmeor Beach Café operates year-round and is one of the best beach cafés in Cornwall. Surf hire available. RNLI lifeguards in season. Dogs restricted May–September. At its best in October when the town is quieter and the surf picks up.

Best for

Surfers, gallery visitors, and serious swimmers

Porthminster Beach

The sheltered alternative — a south-east-facing beach below the train station that catches the morning sun and is protected from the prevailing south-westerly. The sand is pale and fine; the water calm by Cornish standards. The Porthminster Beach Café (the one above the beach, not to be confused with Porthmeor) is rightly famous — Mediterranean-influenced fish dishes, terrace with sea views, a short wine list that's better than it needs to be. Booking essential in summer. RNLI lifeguards in season. Dogs restricted June–September.

Best for

Families, food-focused visitors, and those who prefer calm water

Porthgwidden Beach

The smallest of St Ives's four beaches, tucked between the headland of the Island and the harbour. A crescent of pale sand barely 100 metres across, south-facing and extraordinarily sheltered. The Porthgwidden Beach Café serves good coffee and light lunches. It fills up fast in summer — arrive early or visit after 4pm when day-trippers leave. No surf, no space for beach games; this is a beach for sitting, eating, and looking at the harbour. Dogs restricted in summer.

Best for

Couples, coffee-and-book readers, and those who want the smallest crowd

Carbis Bay Beach

A mile south of St Ives town centre on the branch railway line (one stop from St Ives station — genuinely one of the best short train rides in England), Carbis Bay is a broader, sandier, less metropolitan beach than St Ives's own. The sand is exceptionally pale; the water is shallow and warm; the Carbis Bay Hotel sits above and manages a portion of the beach access. Lifeguards in season. Dogs restricted in summer. The train from St Ives makes this easy to pair with a day in town.

Best for

Families with young children and those wanting more space than the town beaches offer
