Things to do with kids in Marazion.

A tidal island with a real castle you can walk to at low tide, one of the longest sandy beaches in Cornwall, and a bay so broad and calm it has become a windsurfing and kitesurfing destination — Marazion is built for family days.

Marazion · West Cornwall

Marazion's trump card is immediately obvious: St Michael's Mount sits in the bay, connected to the mainland by a granite causeway at low tide and by a small ferry at high tide. Walking across a tidal causeway to a real castle on a real island is the kind of experience that children remember precisely because it cannot be manufactured — the logistics of the tide, the sense of the causeway disappearing behind you, and the climb to the castle at the top are all genuinely dramatic.

The beach backing the bay is one of the longest in Cornwall — low-tide sand stretching east from Marazion toward Long Rock in an unbroken line, with Mount's Bay to the south calm enough for windsurfing and paddleboarding. The Marazion Marsh RSPB reserve sits behind the eastern end of the beach, making birdwatching a genuine option for children with the right equipment and patience. The village has several excellent cafés, a good pub, and enough infrastructure to support a full day without driving elsewhere.

St Michael's Mount

The defining experience of Marazion: a tidal island topped by a medieval castle and sub-tropical gardens, connected to the mainland by a granite causeway walkable for approximately four hours around low tide. The crossing itself is an adventure — children inspect starfish in the causeway pools and arrive on an island inhabited for over a thousand years. The National Trust castle has family trails and audio guides. The gardens above the harbour are beautiful. At high tide, the ferry runs regularly from the beach.

Mount's Bay windsurfing and kitesurfing

Mount's Bay provides consistent and relatively sheltered conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing — the bay's aspect and reliable south-westerly make it a genuine destination for water sport enthusiasts. Marazion Windsurfing Centre on the beach front provides hire and tuition, including beginner sessions for teenagers. The beach is excellent for paddleboarding in calm conditions; boards available to hire. Young children are content watching the kite surfers while building sandcastles — a naturally self-sorting activity.

Marazion Marsh RSPB Reserve

The largest reedbed in south-west England, immediately behind the eastern end of Marazion Beach, managed by the RSPB as a reserve for wintering wildfowl and breeding marsh birds. The viewing screen overlooks open water where bittern, marsh harrier and rare migrants have been recorded. The reserve is free to enter, the paths are flat, and the combination of beach and birdwatching suits families who want a change of pace from the water. Best in winter for duck species and passage waders in autumn.

Causeway rock pooling

The granite causeway connecting the mainland to St Michael's Mount exposes rock pools on both sides as the tide drops. The pools are productive — sea anemones, shore crabs, and occasional starfish are reliable finds — and the setting is unique: rock pooling with a castle directly above you. The best pools are on the northern side of the causeway in the middle section. Low spring tides expose the widest area. Children who lose interest in the pools will simply start crossing to the island.

Long Rock low-tide beach walk

At very low tide, Marazion's beach connects to Long Rock in an unbroken sweep of sand extending two miles east — one of the longest accessible tidal beaches in Cornwall. Walking this stretch gives children the sense of having genuinely explored, and the views across Mount's Bay improve as you move further from the village. The walk is flat, firm and suitable for all ages. Return before the tide turns — beach access can be cut off within an hour if timing is misjudged. The Mount remains in view throughout.
