Things to do with kids in Penzance.

The Jubilee Pool — Britain's finest art deco lido — a ferry port with boats to the Isles of Scilly, and a proper working town with Newlyn fish market on the doorstep: Penzance offers family days with more substance than its resort neighbours.

Penzance · West Cornwall

Penzance is a working town first and a tourist destination second, which gives it an authenticity that the more tourist-focused villages along the coast cannot quite replicate. The harbour handles commercial fishing traffic and the Scillonian ferry; the indoor market is genuine rather than artisanal theatre; the buses run. For families, this translates into a place where the activities are actual activities rather than attractions constructed for visitors.

The Jubilee Pool is the centrepiece family attraction — a 1930s art deco seawater lido on the harbour arm, restored and reopened with a geothermal heated section. On a clear day you can swim in it while looking across the bay to St Michael's Mount. Newlyn, a mile's walk along the seafront, has the working fish market and some of the best fish and chips in the county. The Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Morrab Gardens is small, excellent, and frequently overlooked by the guidebook mainstream.

Jubilee Pool

Britain's largest surviving art deco seawater lido, the Jubilee Pool sits on the harbour arm at Penzance and offers one of the most extraordinary swimming experiences in England. The main pool fills with seawater at each tide; a separate geothermally heated pool maintains a consistent warm temperature year-round. The building's 1935 geometric design is genuinely beautiful. Entry is ticketed and popular — book online to guarantee access in peak season. The poolside café does good food. Open most of the year.

Scillonian ferry to Isles of Scilly

The Scillonian III sails daily from Penzance Harbour to St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly (2 hours 45 minutes each way), passing Wolf Rock lighthouse with good chances of dolphin and gannet sightings. A day trip is perfectly feasible for older children — explore Hugh Town, swim at Porthcressa Beach, and return on the evening sailing. The crossing can be rough; children prone to seasickness should take precautions. Book ahead — the ferry sells out in July and August. The boat trip itself is half the experience.

Ages 7–14, wildlife and adventure enthusiasts

Newlyn Harbour walk

A mile's walk from Penzance along the promenade, Newlyn is one of England's busiest working fishing ports. The fish market operates early morning and while visitor access to the market floor is limited, the activity visible from the harbour wall — boats unloading, lorries collecting, seagulls negotiating — is fascinating for children. The Newlyn Art Gallery nearby runs occasional family events. The harbour walk itself is flat, interesting and free. Several fish and chip shops on the harbour front serve the freshest possible product.

Ages 5–12, free activity

Morrab Gardens subtropical walk

Penzance's Morrab Gardens, a short walk from the promenade, contain one of the most remarkable collections of subtropical plants in Britain — giant echiums, tree ferns, palms and camellias that thrive in the Gulf Stream warmth. The gardens are free to enter and provide a genuine change of pace from beach days. Children who've never seen a plant the size of a tree fern up close tend to find the scale surprising and engaging. Penlee House Gallery borders the gardens, making a natural combined visit.

Ages 4–12, free activity, rainy-day fallback
