Things to do with kids in Fowey.

A deep-water estuary town with a passenger ferry to Polruan, a sandy cove within walking distance, and one of the finest short circular walks in Cornwall — Fowey is the south coast alternative for families who want character over convenience.

Fowey · South-East Cornwall

Fowey sits at the mouth of its own river, which means the town has the quality of being simultaneously coastal and inland — you can look upstream into wooded creek country or downstream to the open sea, and both directions reward your attention. The ferry to Polruan across the estuary runs continuously; the two villages are physically close but temperamentally different, and the crossing itself entertains children of any age.

The Hall Walk — a circular route from Fowey by ferry to Bodinnick, overland to Polruan, and back by ferry — is one of the great short walks of Cornwall, manageable for children aged 7 and up. Readymoney Cove, a ten-minute walk from the town centre, is a sheltered sandy beach. The town wears its literary heritage lightly enough not to alienate children who have no interest in Daphne du Maurier.

Fowey to Polruan ferry crossing

The Polruan Passenger Ferry runs continuously between Fowey town quay and Polruan village, a five-minute crossing that costs almost nothing and is, for children under 8, a significant nautical adventure. Polruan on the far side is quieter, higher, and has better views back over Fowey and the estuary mouth. The ferry runs year-round except in severe weather. From Polruan, the Hall Walk continues overland. Alternatively, use the Bodinnick Car Ferry half a mile upstream if you need to cross with a vehicle.

Hall Walk circular route

The Hall Walk from Fowey is a classic Cornish circuit: ferry to Bodinnick, overland walk through farmland and woodland with estuary views, descent to Polruan, ferry back to Fowey. The full four-mile circuit passes the lookout used by King Charles I during the 1644 siege of Fowey and includes sections of South West Coast Path with open sea views. Suitable for children aged 7 and up who can manage moderate terrain and some elevation. Allow three hours including the ferry crossings.

Ages 7–14, walkers

Readymoney Cove

A ten-minute walk south from Fowey town centre along the river path, Readymoney Cove is a sheltered sandy beach backed by the ruins of St Catherine's Castle, a free English Heritage site. The beach is small and fills quickly in summer — arrive before 11am for a comfortable spot. The sand is fine and the cove is calm enough for paddling and swimming in most conditions. The castle ruins above are accessible and give good views over the estuary entrance. No facilities on the beach; the town is ten minutes back.

Ages 3–10, free activity

Golant Creek kayaking

Three miles upstream from Fowey, Golant sits on a peaceful tidal creek where the river narrows and woodland closes in. Operators offer kayak and canoe hire from here — paddling the upper estuary past Mixtow and Golant village is a markedly different experience from beach watersports. The creek is calm, the birdlife is good (herons, egrets, kingfishers), and the tidal currents are manageable for beginners. Return on the incoming tide rather than against it. Double kayaks available for adults paddling with young children.

Best for

Ages 6–14, nature enthusiasts

Lantic Bay beach walk

Two miles east of Fowey via the B3082 and a National Trust car park, Lantic Bay requires a steep 20-minute descent — but delivers one of the finest unspoiled beaches on the south Cornish coast: a pale crescent of sand at the foot of granite cliffs with outstanding water clarity for swimming and snorkelling. The climb back up is the price of isolation. No facilities of any kind. Best with children aged 7 and up who can manage the terrain. Arrive early or late — the small car park fills in summer.

Best for

Ages 7–14, snorkellers
