Things to do with kids in Mevagissey.

A working double harbour where shark fishing boats and traditional luggers share the quay, a small aquarium in the old lifeboat house, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan two miles inland — Mevagissey rewards families who dig beneath the surface.

Mevagissey · South Coast

Mevagissey is one of the most intact working fishing villages in Cornwall — the double harbour still operates commercially, the boats are real rather than decorative, and the fish sold from the quay was landed this morning. Children who have absorbed the romantic notion of a Cornish fishing village and found the reality disappointing elsewhere will find it less so here. The harbour is compact enough to feel genuinely comprehensible to a 6-year-old.

The Mevagissey Aquarium, in the old lifeboat house on the inner harbour, is small and underrated — local fish species in local seawater, properly explained. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, two miles inland, provide the area's most significant family attraction: Victorian kitchen gardens, a sub-tropical jungle garden, and the famous mud maid land art installation that children find mysteriously compelling. The bus from Mevagissey to Heligan runs in season, making a combined day practical without a car.

Mevagissey Aquarium

Housed in the old lifeboat house on the inner harbour wall, Mevagissey Aquarium focuses on local species found in the waters around the village — wrasse, bass, rays, and small sharks in tanks of genuine Cornish seawater. The displays are appropriately scaled and the explanations clear without being patronising. Entry is inexpensive and the aquarium is small enough to avoid the glazed-eye syndrome that affects children in larger institutions. A model boat exhibition runs alongside. Best combined with a harbour walk immediately after.

Lost Gardens of Heligan

Two miles from Mevagissey (bus in season, or a short drive), Heligan is one of Britain's great garden restoration projects — Victorian pleasure grounds that fell into disuse after World War One and were rediscovered in the 1990s. The sub-tropical Jungle Garden, with its tree ferns and bamboo stands, is genuinely dramatic. The mud maid and giant's head land art sculptures are the children's favourite stopping points. The productive garden and working farm add another layer. Allow a full half-day minimum; the site is large.

Shark and big-game fishing trips

Mevagissey is one of the principal centres for shark fishing in Britain — blue sharks, and occasionally porbeagles and thresher sharks, are targeted in deeper water south of the bay in summer. Several operators run trips from the harbour, typically catch-and-release and designed for families with older children and teenagers. It is a full-day commitment at sea — prepare accordingly. Blue shark sightings are reliable from June to September. Age and size restrictions apply; check with operators before booking.

Ages 10–16, teenagers, adventurous families

Mevagissey double harbour walk

Mevagissey's outer and inner basins separated by a pier form one of the most photogenic and genuinely working harbours in Cornwall. Walk the outer pier for views of the bay and incoming boats; explore the inner harbour for the fish market, net stores and traditional luggers. Morning is the best time to see activity. Crabbing lines can be dropped from various points on the inner harbour. The harbour-front shops sell fishing gear, fresh fish and holiday provisions. Free to explore at any time.

Ages 3–12, free activity

Pentewan Beach

Two miles north of Mevagissey, Pentewan is a flat, sandy beach backed by a holiday park with a sheltered lagoon popular with kayakers and paddleboarders. The beach is broad and accessible; the gradient is gentle, making it suitable for very young children. Pentewan Sands Holiday Park operates watersports hire from the beach in season. The back-beach lagoon is calmer than the main beach and ideal for introducing young children to kayaking. A seasonal bus runs from Mevagissey to Pentewan.
