Where to stay in Mevagissey.

Cornwall's second-largest working fishing harbour — a south-coast village that has held on to its working identity in a way the north-coast fishing villages haven't quite managed.

Mevagissey · South Coast

Mevagissey sits on the south Cornwall coast about ten miles south of St Austell, organised tightly around a twin-basin harbour where ten or fifteen fishing boats still land daily. The village climbs the hill behind the harbour in a maze of narrow streets — the Ship Inn at the head of the quay, the Lost in the Lanes deli, the Mevagissey Aquarium in the old lifeboat house. Less filmed and less famous than Port Isaac, Mevagissey rewards travellers who want a working harbour without the Doc Martin tourism.

Self-catering spreads in a clean pattern: the village itself for harbour-walkability and atmosphere; Portmellon for a separate cove a five-minute walk south; Pentewan for the long sand beach two miles north; Gorran Haven for a quieter cove four miles south; and the Heligan Estate area inland for garden-and-country base. The village absorbs visitors well thanks to its narrow streets and working culture — even in August, Mevagissey doesn't feel film-set in the way Port Isaac can.

Mevagissey harbour & village

The cottages around the harbour and on the steep lanes above — walking distance to four pubs, the harbour, the aquarium and the village shops. Self-catering here is tight converted fishermen's cottages with steep stairs and small rooms; most have no parking. The harbour quay is the living room of the holiday.

Best for

Atmospheric short stays, harbour-photography holidays, walkers

Portmellon

The next cove south — a five-minute walk over the headland or a short drive. A sandy beach, a single pub (the Rising Sun), and a small cluster of self-catering cottages with sea views. Quieter than Mevagissey village, with the same coast path access and the village walkable for dinner.

Best for

Couples, beach-and-village balance, quieter base near Mevagissey

Pentewan

Two miles north — a long sandy beach with the Pentewan Sands holiday park behind. Self-catering here is mostly within the holiday park (caravans and lodges) plus a few cottages in the small village above. Family-led atmosphere; the beach is far bigger than Mevagissey's harbour beach.

Best for

Families wanting a proper beach with Mevagissey village access

Gorran Haven

Four miles south of Mevagissey — a small fishing village with two sandy beaches, a tighter community feel, and an excellent fish-and-chip shop. Self-catering here is a mix of cottages in the village and houses on the lanes above. Drive to Mevagissey in ten minutes; walk the coast path in two hours.

Best for

Quieter beach holidays, walkers, families wanting calmer cove access

Heligan & Pentewan Valley

The country inland behind Pentewan and Mevagissey — the Lost Gardens of Heligan as the headline, plus the rolling pasture and wooded valleys that surround it. Self-catering here is farmhouses and converted estate buildings at lower prices than the coast. Garden-led holidays in spring and autumn are excellent.

Best for

Garden lovers, longer self-catering breaks, dog walkers
