Mevagissey · South Coast

Mevagissey faces south into the English Channel from a double harbour built for the pilchard industry that once sustained the entire village. The fishing boats still go out, the nets still dry on the quay, and the working character gives the village a solidity that survives the summer crowds. For walkers, Mevagissey is the gateway to one of the best sections of the South West Coast Path between the Lizard and Plymouth — the headlands and coves south towards Gorran Haven and the extraordinary Black Head promontory have the remote feel of somewhere fifty miles from a major settlement, not five.

Inland from the coast, the Lost Gardens of Heligan — restored from dereliction after 1992 and now one of the most celebrated gardens in England — sit in a wooded valley two miles from the village. The gardens themselves are a walk: seventy acres of pleasure grounds, kitchen gardens, and jungle valley that take a full half-day to properly explore. The path connecting Mevagissey to Heligan via the Pentewan valley is pleasant year-round and avoids the summer car park queues at the garden gates.

Mevagissey to Gorran Haven

The four-mile Coast Path south from Mevagissey to Gorran Haven is one of the finest stretches on the south Cornish coast. The path climbs above Portmellon — a small cove with a slipway where boats are built — and traverses the high clifftops above Chapel Point before descending to the sandy beach at Gorran Haven. The section above Chapel Point looks back to Mevagissey harbour and the whole sweep of St Austell Bay. Return by bus from Gorran Haven or retrace for an eight-mile day.

Black Head Headland

Black Head — the dramatic promontory south of Gorran Haven — is the most southerly point on the mid-Cornwall coast and juts into the Channel with 270-degree sea views. The path from Gorran Haven to the head and back is three miles of excellent clifftop walking on good National Trust paths. The headland sits on ancient coastal grassland with rare wildflowers. Continue south to Hemmick Beach — a remote, sandy cove — for a five-mile circular.

Lost Gardens of Heligan

The path from Mevagissey to the Lost Gardens of Heligan runs two miles north through the Pentewan valley — a sheltered, wooded route that avoids the B-road approach. The gardens cover seventy acres: Victorian pleasure grounds, a working kitchen garden, a jungle valley with tree ferns and banana plants, and a wildflower meadow. Entry fee applies; allow three to four hours. The path connection from Mevagissey makes a satisfying six-mile day circular.

Portmellon and Chapel Point

A short loop from Mevagissey taking in Portmellon cove — where traditional boat building still takes place on the slipway — and the clifftop above Chapel Point. The path north of Portmellon provides views back to Mevagissey harbour and across St Austell Bay to the clay country. Three miles circular; an excellent half-hour addition to a morning in the village that most day visitors completely miss.

Pentewan Beach and Valley Trail

Two miles north of Mevagissey, Pentewan is a flat sandy beach accessible via the Pentewan Valley Trail — a level, surfaced path along a former mineral railway. The trail from Mevagissey is two miles; from Pentewan beach it continues north to St Austell via the valley. The beach is broad with shallow water good for paddling. The trail is ideal for families and accessible walkers in any season.
