Things to do with kids in Truro.

Cornwall's only city offers the Royal Cornwall Museum, a Victorian Gothic cathedral, boat trips down the Fal to Falmouth, and the county's best-stocked independent shops — a proper city day when beach weather fails.

Truro · Mid Cornwall

Truro is a practical choice for families for a specific reason: it is the only city in Cornwall and therefore the only place with genuinely urban infrastructure — a museum, a large covered market, several indoor entertainment options, and a theatre. When three consecutive days of Atlantic weather reduce the beach agenda to nothing, Truro absorbs families without the apologetic quality that smaller towns inevitably project on rainy days.

The Royal Cornwall Museum on River Street is the county's principal museum and one of the better regional museums in England — Egyptian mummies, Cornish tin-mining history, and a fine art collection strong in Newlyn School painting. The Cathedral is Victorian Gothic and genuinely impressive at scale; children who are usually indifferent to churches find the proportions and stained glass harder to ignore than a smaller building. The Fal River boat service to Falmouth turns a journey between two destinations into an attraction in itself.

Royal Cornwall Museum

The county's principal museum on River Street covers Egyptian antiquities (two genuine mummies), Cornish tin-mining history, geology and natural history, and a fine art collection strong in Newlyn School paintings. The Egyptian collection is the unexpected highlight for children — the mummies hold attention reliably where more conventional exhibits lose it. Entry is free for children; adult admission is modest. The museum runs holiday activity programmes and handling sessions in school holidays. Allow two to three hours for a thorough visit.

Truro Cathedral

England's first new Anglican cathedral built since the Reformation (construction 1880–1910), Truro Cathedral is Victorian Gothic at its most confident — three towers, nave vault, and the 1887 Father Willis organ. Children who are usually immune to ecclesiastical architecture find the scale harder to dismiss. The Cathedral runs family trails during school holidays; the treasury collection includes genuinely interesting medieval artefacts. Entry is free with a suggested donation. The Cathedral Coffee House attached is good for a mid-morning stop.

Fal River boat trip to Falmouth

The Enterprise Boats seasonal service from Truro Town Quay down the Fal River to Falmouth runs Easter to October, taking approximately 75 minutes through Carrick Roads — one of the world's deepest natural harbours. The journey passes Trelissick Garden (National Trust), traditional oyster fishermen dredging by hand, and the occasional laid-up container ship moored in the deeper reaches. A return by road completes a circular day between Cornwall's two main south-coast towns. An outstanding family journey in fine weather.

Hall for Cornwall family shows

The Hall for Cornwall on Back Quay is the county's main producing theatre and touring venue, presenting family shows, pantomime, and children's theatre throughout the year. The venue was rebuilt and reopened in 2021 with a new auditorium. The family programme is strong in school holidays and Christmas. Check the online listings before planning a Truro day — a family matinee combined with lunch in the city makes an excellent non-beach day regardless of weather. Booking ahead is essential for popular productions.

Boscawen Park and Victoria Gardens

Truro's public parks are underused by visitors but excellent for families with younger children who need running space. Boscawen Park, on the eastern edge of the city by the river, has a large children's play area, open grass, and Lemon Quay access to the city centre. Victoria Gardens near the Cathedral has formal planting and a central fountain. In summer the city hosts outdoor events in both parks. Free to use and accessible with pushchairs. A useful decompression space between museum visits and a lunch stop.
