Things to do with kids in Polperro.

A car-free fishing village where the lanes are too narrow for vehicles, a harbour museum dedicated to smuggling, and rock pools accessible at every low tide — Polperro is Cornwall's most concentrated small-village experience for families.

Polperro · South-East Cornwall

Polperro requires commitment to reach and rewards it immediately. The car park sits half a mile above the village; from there, you walk down a wooded valley or take a small electric tram, and the village opens around a corner in a way that has been making first-time visitors reach for their cameras for two hundred years. It is small, densely built, and almost entirely car-free — the lanes are simply too narrow, which creates an atmosphere of quiet that very few Cornish villages retain in summer.

The harbour is the focus. Fishing boats still operate here; the inner harbour fills at high tide; at low tide the outer rocks are covered in anemones and crabs. The Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing in the old pilchard cellars gives children the context to appreciate what they are looking at — the village's systematic smuggling history in the 18th and 19th centuries is documented with appropriate relish. The coastal path west to Talland Bay (two miles) is one of the most beautiful short walks on the south coast.

Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing

Housed in the old fish cellars beside the harbour, this small museum covers the twin industries that shaped Polperro: fishing and smuggling. The smuggling exhibits — contraband goods, the names of the principal operators, and the scale of the operation — are genuinely fascinating and documented in enough detail to feel like history rather than heritage theatre. Children who have any interest in pirates or hidden cargoes will be engaged. Entry is inexpensive; the museum is small enough to cover in 45 minutes without fatigue.

Harbour crabbing and rock pools

Polperro's inner harbour and the rocks around the outer harbour entrance are excellent crabbing and pooling terrain at low tide. The pools on the outer rocks hold sea anemones, urchins, small fish and shore crabs in good numbers. The inner harbour is a reliable crabbing spot on a rising tide. Lines are available from the village shop. Supervise children carefully on the outer rocks — the surfaces are slippery and swell can run into the entrance without much warning.

Coastal walk to Talland Bay

The South West Coast Path west from Polperro to Talland Bay (two miles) is one of the finest short walks on the south Cornish coast — wooded in places, open clifftop in others, with good views of Looe Island and occasional seal sightings from the headlands. Talland Bay is a sheltered sandy and shingle beach with a seasonally open cafe and good rock pools. Return the same way or arrange a taxi. A moderately challenging two miles with some elevation gain, suitable for children aged 6 and up.

Polperro Model Village

A 1:24 scale recreation of Polperro as it appeared in the 1940s, housed in a barn above the village, with working models of the harbour and boats. It is unashamedly old-fashioned and completely sincere — careful craftsmanship applied over decades. Children who find model railways compelling will love it; others will cycle through in fifteen minutes and move on. Entry is modest. Open seasonally — check before visiting. Combined with the smuggling museum it makes a good rainy half-day.

Looe Island wildlife boat trip

From Polperro, seasonal boat trips run to Looe Island — a Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve home to grey seals, nesting seabirds, and rare plants. The crossing takes 20–30 minutes, passing the Polperro reef. Landing is possible in calm conditions; at other times the trip circles the island and returns. Grey seal pups are reliably visible in autumn. Book via the harbour in Polperro or Looe. Trips are weather-dependent — check conditions before committing children who may be disappointed by a cancellation.
